I always correct mistakes when my students speak or write. Correcting pronunciation mistakes is also very important. I put a strong emphasis on grammar. Grammar is complicated sometimes, but if you know it well , you will not make critical mistakes. I have made it a habit to constantly check for mistakes, even little ones, when my students read texts, retell them, discuss them, write short summaries, etc.
Just knowing very simple rules makes it possible to build your own sentences correctly, hence making communication possible. As for vocabulary... all one needs is a good dictionary (there are many good on-line dictionaries available in the internet). Of course, I sent files (in pdf- format) with common words which students use to practice making they own sentences. I use different kinds of exercises to get the new structures and words into long- term memory.
Absolute beginners start off making very easy sentences. Once they are able to do it, they begin to make the sentences more complicated.
For example:
1. They read.
2. They read books.
3. They read books every day.
4. They read interesting books every day.
5. They read interesting books every day when they come from work.
6. They read interesting books every day when they come from work unless they are tired.
7. They read interesting books every day when they come from work unless they are very tired.
etc.
(Of course, these sentences will be in the language that you are learning )
I also make printouts which guide students to speak about particular topics. Following these guidelines the students are able to talk about themselves, about their friends, about their jobs, what they think about a particular issue, etc.
